If you were to look at Social Media the United States and many other parts of the world, you would believe that the world of Social Media was flat, dominated by social continents including Facebook, Twitter, blogs, YouTube, and Flickr. As we zoom in, we visualize other established and emerging social services that depict provinces [...]

Per the earlier post on a Melb poker night, I loved the idea so much we’re now sponsoring it.

32 people. We’ve gone from 9 to 18 today. If you’re in Melbourne, and have avoided MTUB, or are a regular, either way come down. It’s free, and there is free prizes for those who register. I’m hoping a free drink for all, then after that a prize for the winner, not sorted yet, but it will happen.

The thing I love about Poker is that it’s the great equalizer, even vs MTUB itself. You sit on a table with folks, you get...

I haven’t done one of these in a long time.

The last I can recall (well… Google) was for May last year (link.)

In that time we suffered the great server problem of 2009 (it’s probably not completely unrelated that less than a month after the worst was over (and it went on for months) I lost my marriage), we’ve seen highs and low, good money months and not so good.

The good news is that today we remain on track, although we’ve never quite broken through the targets we once set ourselves.

Our stats since May...

Melbourne Poker Night

The folks behind MTUB (Melbourne Twitter Underground Brigade) have organised a poker night Feb 24.

Details here.

If you like poker (and there’s no secret that I love the game) and want to meet some Twitter/ tech people over a friendly game, sign up, it’s completely free.

If you’ve ever played Pub Poker before you’ll also know that a poker table is a great way to meet new people as well. Poker is the great equalizer.

My only disappointment: it’s an “annual” event. If we can get enough people it should be more frequent. If not, I’ll have to...

Sea Shepherd Fibs Again?

Wikipedia:

“In warfare, ramming is a technique that was used in air, sea and land combat. The term originated from battering ram, a siege weapon used to bring down fortifications by hitting it with the force of the ram’s momentum….”

No matter how many times I watch this video, I get the same result. The front of the Sea Shepherd boat hits the SIDE of the Japanese boat. If the Sea Shepherd was rammed, wouldn’t it have been the other way around?

Of note as well, it would appear that the Japanese vessels attempts to avoid collision...

Sky Business: The implications of social media for business and why Australia leads in social media usage

Last week I was interviewed on Sky Business about recent data showing that Australia leads globally in use of social media, and the implications of such high levels of social media usage for business.

Here is the full interview, with major points noted below.

  • It is surprising to see Australia at the top of the global charts in social media usage, given that just a few years ago it was significantly behind in uptake – this has been a dramatic acceleration in usage.
  • It is a fascinating question why social...

EdgeTheory: The Battle for Real-Time Reporting, Curation

The issue of real-time news reporting and curation is becoming increasingly visible and important as news breaks on blogs, Twitter, Facebook and other social media properties. Tonight, Chris Saad and I talked about how the mainstream media can adapt to involve content curation in addition to their content creation, and how it still makes sense to have some investigative reporting in addition to real-time reactions.

The discussion weaved from curation tools like Cascaad and my6sense to the recent news of continue reading...

In the world of custom news applications that look to provide you personalized content, there are a growing number of contenders using different methods to filter the "best" from the "rest". Some, like Techmeme, utilize editorial directive in picking the top stories to present. Others, such as Tweetmeme and Digg, use popularity as that method. my6sense watches your own activity and customizes it for you. Meehive, Regator and others show content based...

Over the last ten days, many Twitter users have found the total counts listed by their profile off by as much as three times. While the focus of the popular microblogging service is around the conversations and links, statistics and numbers continue to draw attention, so such a massive change has people asking questions. Meanwhile, the company's help forum shows the bug was initially a low priority issue, anticipated to only impact a few users, since found to be much more widespread.

The team is working on it, and...

The power of personal brands in strategy and attracting talent

A few months ago I wrote about The shift from corporate brands to personal brands, referencing Jeremiah Owyang's move from Forrester to the newly-founded Altimeter Group with former colleagues.

This is a long-term secular trend - in fact last week when I spoke at the Online Marketing by Design event I pointed to it as one of the three most important trends for this year. I was discussing it in the context of marketing, where companies must recognize that trust resides in individuals not institutions, and use this to shape their external engagement....
